Barely two weeks after playing a prominent role in Microsoft's launch of Windows 8 and the Surface tablet, Redmond veteran Steven Sinofsky is out as head of the Windows Division, effective immediately.
Sinofsky, who led development and marketing of Microsoft's flagship product for more than three years, joined the company as a software design engineer in July 1989. His departure, announced late Monday, was abrupt and took the tech and business worlds by surprise, with All Things D likening the suddenness of the news to Apple's ouster of iOS chief Scott Forstall late last month.
The tech site cited unnamed sources as saying that the Microsoft executive's departure "came amid growing tension between Sinofsky and other top executives." "Sinofsky, though seen as highly talented, was viewed at the top levels as not the kind of team player that the company was looking for," according to All Things D's Ina Fried.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer addressed Sinofsky's departure in a company statement, describing the move as a "leadership change" without explaining why such a prominent and out-front executive was leaving the company so close to the roll out of its biggest new product in years.
"I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company. The products and services we have delivered to the market in the past few months mark the launch of a new era at Microsoft," Ballmer said.
"We've built an incredible foundation with new releases of Microsoft Office, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Microsoft Surface, Windows Server 2012, and 'Halo 4,' and great integration of services such as Bing, Skype, and Xbox across all our products. To continue this success it is imperative that we continue to drive alignment across all Microsoft teams, and have more integrated and rapid development cycles for our offerings."
Sinofsky took over the Windows Division in July 2009 after more than a decade contributing to and leading the development of Microsoft's Office products. He was also heavily involved in recruiting talent to Redmond over the years.
"It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company," Sinofsky said in a statement.
Julie Larson-Green has been promoted to lead Windows software and hardware engineering, while chief financial officer and chief marketing officer Tami Reller will lead the business side of the Windows operation while retaining her current positions at the company, Microsoft said.
"Leading Windows engineering is an incredible challenge and opportunity, and as I looked at the technical and business skills required to continue our Windows trajectory—great communication skills, a proven ability to work across product groups, strong design, deep technical expertise, and a history of anticipating and meeting customer needs—it was clear to me that Julie is the best possible person for this job, and I'm excited to have her in this role," Ballmer said of Larson-Green's new role.

If you are looking forward to a well finished low-cost, set-top box capable of streaming full HD video, then you might consider the Diamond's AMP1000. Mini computers like Raspberry Pi and MK802 can do the same but this might not attract everybody as it lacks finishing. You can use the AMP1000 to load apps, play games, listen to music, view photos, read digital books and stream TV shows or movies at 1080p.
It runs Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread and supports integrated Wi-Fi connectivity and HDMI compatibility with both monitors and TVs. It comes with a three-in-one remote control that acts as a keyboard, mouse, or motion controller. Diamond Multimedia CEO, Bruce Zaman has described this as a fully customisable Android box.
The operating system is upgradeable but there are no confirmed reports as to when the device will get upgraded to higher Android versions like Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or 4.1 Jelly Bean. You can even add Bluetooth connectivity by paying extra $10 for it. The device is available now for $129 with a mail-in rebate, bringing the cost down to $109.
Continuing with its trend of rapid releases, Mozilla has released new version of Firefox Web browser for desktop and mobile devices. Firefox 15, the latest version of the browser targets the add-ons that consume RAM and hence uses less memory.
The new version of Firefox for Android also offers speed improvements along with a couple of new features
The updated browser comes with a 'request desktop site' option, which allows the users to switch between mobile and full desktop views for Web pages in cases where both are available. The browser maker has resolved the text selection problems and has also added a swipe-to-close gesture for browser tabs. It also brings the ability to find text on a Web page.
The desktop version of the browser, which comes for Linux, Windows and Mac comes added with silent updates, which lets users download and install software update without interventions. It means that new versions of Firefox will be automatically downloaded in the background after release and will be installed the next time users starts the browser. It is the same way as the updates in Google's Chrome is installed.
The Firefox maker says that it has been working on the reduction of memory usage for years. It has finally resorted to targeting 'poorly written add-ons'. The new Firefox can detect memory leaks and has the ability to vacate the memory when it’s no longer required by the plugin.
Firefox for Android can be downloaded from Google Play Store and the latest version of desktop browser is available to be downloaded from Mozilla website.

This news will definitely add colours to the already shining Google's Android operating system. Developers have successfully ported the latest version of Android - 4.1 Jelly Bean to the Nokia N9 that ran on MeeGo originally. Previously, Nokia N9 successfully ran a built of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and now, developers at the NITDroid project ran Jelly Bean on it, thus, proving Android to be the most versatile operating system.
Based on a Cortex A8 processor clocked at 1GHz, Nokia N9 has 1GB of RAM, powered by a PowerVR SGX530 GPU and features a 9.9-cm (3.9-inch) AMOLED screen with a resolution of 480 x 854 and a pixel density of 251 ppi and sports an 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Optics.
Developers released a video of N9 running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich previously, which showcased the ability to dual boot and the option to choose OS after powering the device, 3D drivers, Open GL, rotation, touchscreen, headset buttons, USB networking, LCD off in sleep mode, Alarm, mounting of My Docs as SD Card, software video decoding, network registration. The developers have also released a video of Android Jelly Bean running on Nokia N9, and some of the features were fully functional.
Here's the video:
The next release of Microsoft's Office 2013 will have support for Strict Open XML and Open Document Format (ODF) 1.2. Also, it includes support for opening PDF documents, so they can be edited within Word and saved to any supporting format. But, the catch here is that this change did not happen on its own. Microsoft was actually forced to include the ODF format along with PDF format due to the standardization of these two Open Source document formats.
This victory has brought out two important facts about open source. “First, open source software can be the perfect competitive pacesetter. Second, open source innovation provides giant's shoulders upon which others can stand,” reports Simon Phipps of Info World.
Microsoft enjoyed monopoly in the productivity software market since the beginning of the year 2000. Sun Microsystems, had then introduced an open source office suite project, StarOffice known as OpenOffice.org. According to the report, “The StarOffice/OpenOffice.org developers accelerated a project to create a modern, XML-based file format for their suite it helped in better promotion of both inter-operability with other office tools, as well as to maintain compatibility between different versions."
Open source may not touch the lives of common PC users but people tend to benefit from a competitive market as it forced Microsoft to adopt both version-to-version file compatibility and the concept of interoperability.
This article is for those who have got their hands on Google’s Nexus 7 and are now confused how to kickstart. With the dearth of online material available on the tablet, here is help for all those who feel stranded.
Tip 1: Google feels that Nexus 7 works best in portrait orientation, so they have fixed the orientation at that. But this may not hold true for all. So, to active the rotation, swipe down the notifications block from the top of the screen. You will see a little tablet with rotation arrows. Tap it and it will rotate the screen to landscape orientations as you turn the tablet around.
However, this rotation will still not work on your homescreen. To deal with that, you can download the Ultimate Rotation app, which will enable you to rotate the screen anytime.
Tip 2: While we are not saying that the typing is not good enough on Nexus 7, but it is advised that you buy the SwiftKey 3 tablet app to make your experience swifter! The keyboard will study you as you write and with time will become smart enough to judge what you are going to write. This app comes at a very cheap price and is totally value for money.
Tip 3: Configuring Gmail on your tablet will be a cakewalk, as simple as downloading the app but for other email accounts, you simply have to run the Email app and follow the instructions as you go along. You can set as many accounts as you want.
Tip 4: You don’t have to keep going to every app to see if it has got updates and do it accordingly; Nexus 7 makes the process simple for you. Just go to the Play Store app that is preinstalled on your tablet and click on the My Apps icon present at the top of the screen. It will show you all the updates available. Simply press the Update All button and within minutes, all your apps will be updated. You can also choose the automatic update option.
Tip 5: What is life without social networks? Well, to sort that out, go to the Settings and then to Accounts section. Now add every network that you are on- Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN or Skype.
Tip 6: Next obvious step is to set up the home screen, which can be accessed by swiping left and right on the default screen. It is easy to put icons that you use most by pressing the Apps icon in the center of the dock on the home screen. You can take your time and use all the apps before you decide the ones you like the most and then simply drag them to the home screen. To remove an app, hold on the app and drag it to the Remove X on the top of the screen. This will only remove it from the screen. The home screen has icons in the bottom that are set by default, known as dock. The dock has 5 default icons chosen by Google. You can simply drag and drop to customise the dock for you.
Tip 7: Hitting the Google Play store can be a bit daunting with loads and loads of Android apps available in the list. To find just the ones you want, get the Tablified Market HD app for free. The apps listed there are categorised to help you find the one you like.
Tip 8: If you are a music lover, you don’t have to keep storing music files on your tablet. The music bought from Google Music store or the Amazon MP3 store allows you to stream it from the web. This requires a network connection for playing your music but saves valuable tablet storage space which is limited on the Nexus 7.

The government has lifted its restriction on bulk SMSes and MMSes with immediate effect. It's notable that the ban has been revoked a day before the stipulated 15-day deadline of August 31. The move is a huge respite for millions of pre-paid mobile users, who were restricted from sending more than 20 SMSes a day in the wake of the NE situation.
"After reviewing the matter again on Thursday, the ministry lifted the restriction allowing citizens to use text messages and MMSes without any limit of numbers with immediate effect," said a home ministry official is quoted as saying.
The government had restricted the number of SMSes and MMSes to 5 per day on August 17 to prevent circulation of rumours and hate content that led to the exodus of north east Indians from various parts of the country. The government later eased the restriction by increasing the cap to 20 SMSes per day. Social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter came under the government scanner as well.
The move to ban bulk SMSes, however, met severe criticism, as it affected only pre-paid users, who constitute more than 90 percent of mobile phone users in the country. Moreover, the telecom operators feared the SMS ban could cause loss up to 7-8 percent in revenue this month. On the other hand, the free instant messaging apps such as Nimbuzz and WhatsApp reported a significant surge in usages during the ban period.
The government is reportedly working on an area-specific message monitoring system, which will help the authorities to impose such restriction in the area affected instead of a nationwide ban in near future. To know more, read our previous coverage.
What do you think about the government's decision to revoke the ban on the bulk SMSes? Let us know in the comments section below:

Samsung’s pre-IFA 2012 press conference held a lot of announcements, ranging from Android and Windows Phone 8 smartphones, to Windows 8 and RT tablets.
The Android smartphone Samsung introduced was the massive 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II, about which you can find more details here. The Korean giant also announced the world’s first Windows Phone 8 device, the Samsung ATIV S. The news is quite surprising, as the industry was expecting Nokia (because of their exclusive partnership with Microsoft), to be the first company to reveal a Windows Phone 8 device, at their September 5 press conference.
As expected, the next generation of Windows Phone devices would finally bring current generation hardware to the platform, and the 8.7mm-thick Samsung ATIV S doesn’t disappoint - it seems to be the device codenamed Odyssey we'd seen last month in leaked Samsung court documents, when Samsung had also launched the Windows Phone 7.5-based Omnia M. It features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED Gorilla Glass 2 display with a 1,280x720 pixel resolution, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Krait (MSM8960) processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear autofocus camera with LED flash and 1080p HD recording, along with a 1.9MP front camera.
The Windows Phone 8-based Samsung ATIV S will come in 16 or 32GB storage variants. Connectivity options include 3G (HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot & DLNA functionality, Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, NFC, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS, stereo FM radio with RDS, and microUSB. Weighing in at 135 grams, the ATIV S is powered by a rather large 2,300 mAh battery.
On paper, the Samsung ATIV S looks like a capable device to usher in the Windows Phone 8 platform, and with the hardware finally catching, we are eager to see what other manufacturers, especially Nokia, will bring to the table. For now, the pricing and release date of the Samsung ATIV S haven't been revealed. Stay tuned for more IFA 2012 coverage, including Samsung’s Windows 8 and RT tablets, called the ATIV Tab, ATIV Smart PC, and ATIV Smart PC Pro.
The 4-inch Samsung Windows Phone 8 device codenamed Marco should be unveiled soon as well. Meanwhile, check out some more renders of the WP8-based Samsung ATIV S, below:

Now updating apps from Google Play Store will get smarter. Google has introduced what it calls “Smart App Updates”, which is a respite for your phone's battery life as well as you data balance.
The users will benefit from this feature in the way that they will not have to waste their expansive data, as an app update is about 30 per cent of the total app size.
The concept of updating apps smartly was first announced at Google I/O developer conference. Smart App Updates allows the user to download only the updated part rather than the full application. This feature helps in case of big apps or games, which can suck a lot of battery life and data balance.
Smart App Updates is not Play Store/Android Market version dependent. It is ruled from the server-side. The users will benefit from this feature in the way that they will not have to waste their expansive data, as an app update is about 30 per cent of the total app size. It would also save battery from draining as users will not have to spend 1-15 minutes every day updating their apps.
The feature will be helpful for the telecom operators in the way that it will take a lot of load off their already congested networks as the consumers will not download the entire app everytime.
The feature will ensure that more number of people have the latest version of the app installed in their devices.
PC users are being urged to disable Java software in their browsers by computer security firms across the globe. According to experts, the free software from Oracle Corp opens up the users' machines to hackers. There is no way to defend yourself against such attacks, is the concern of the experts.
The warnings began emerging from security firms like Alien Vault and Rapid 7 over the weekend has become a major security threat for the PC community. Researchers have been able to identify the code that attacks users' machines. The code works by exploiting the newly discovered flaw in the latest Java software.
Jaime Blasco, a research manager with AlienVault Labs, said, “Once the code is used for exploiting the machines, yet another piece of software called 'Poison Ivy' is released which helps the hackers gain control over the infected computer.”
Security firms have suggested that users should disable Java software in their Internet browsers. It is worth mentioning here that it is a major security risk as Java sits on 97 per cent of the enterprise desktops. This data has been provided by Oracle itself. Tod Beardsley, engineering manager, Rapid7's Metasploit division said, "The attacker can perform any action on the victim's machine, if exploited."
The hack happens without the knowledge of the users simply by a visit to any website that has been compromised by hackers, opined Joshua Drake, senior research scientist, Accuvant. Security experts suggested that users should not enable Java for universal use on their browsers.

Ever thought of talking with a stylus? Well, Samsung has made that possible for you. The Korean smartphone maker has showcased an all-new stylus with Galaxy Note 10.1. It's called the BT S Pen (HM5100).
The stylus appears to be a normal S pen that comes with Galaxy Note but it surely has different capabilities. This little device includes Bluetooth, microphone and speaker. So, you can even attend calls with this 'special' stylus.
This little device includes Bluetooth, microphone and speaker. This means you can even attend calls with this 'special' stylus.
The stylus comes with a vibration mechanism. It alerts the users of incoming calls. Users can then attend the call with the ‘call button’ placed near the earpiece. Some online reports vouch that the call quality is also good. The BT S Pen provides a talk time of 3 hours, 130 hours of standby. It can be charged with the AC adapter by plugging in the micro-USB port right above the shirt clip.
The BT S Pen weighs 21 grams and is Bluetooth 3.0 compatible. So it can be used with other devices as well. The company has not revealed the price and availability of this device so far.
Have a look at how the new stylus works:
Linux powered low cost PCs have been flooding the market, literally. The trend kick started with Raspberry Pi and was followed by a number of other options. This list refuses to die down and another option has made its way in the market- Great Wall U310! With a full-fledged PC into a keyboard case, the new U310 sells for as little as $239 and comes with Ubuntu Linux preloaded.
The PC-in-a-keyboard is being sold for $260 by Newegg. This is the price for a refurbished model. According to a Liliputing website, tucked into the keyboard case is a 1.8 GHz Intel Atom D525 dual core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. The system uses Intel GMA 3150 graphics. It also features 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and built into the sides and back of the keyboard you’ll find a VGA port, 5 USB ports, mic and headphone jacks. There are also built-in speakers.
The PC-in-a-keyboard comes preloaded with Ubuntu Linux, but it is reportedly able to work with Windows XP, Windows 7, or Windows 8. This is not the first keyboard PC from the company. In 2010, the company had unveiled an integrated touchscreen LCD called the Great Wall Cross PC U510.
Yes think of using mobile instead of remote to control your TV,DVD,home theater and so on..(actually the list is very long !)
LG has announced the Optimus Vu II for the Korean market. The Android-powered smartphone comes with a new app called the Q Remote which adds IR (infrared) functionality to the handset. The Q Remote can play with compatible set top boxes, home appliances and other devices/gadgets by LG. In other words, the device can double up as a remote control for your home.
Besides its remote functions, the company hasn't released any other technical details for the device. According to a report, the smartphone will control over 300 brands of TV, set-top boxes, A/V equipment and other technology. Interestingly, the new app will help the device automatically recognise when you’re at home.
"When the Vu II figures out you’re connected to your home WiFi network, it automatically adds remote control shortcut buttons to its lockscreen. That way, even if your phone is locked, the rest of your family and your friends can use it to control your home entertainment system," SlashGear said in a report.
The new device is expected to be a special edition with the same specs as the current model. Optimus Vu features a 12.7-cm (5-inch) 4:3 aspect ratio display with a 1024 x 768 resolution and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The device will be launched next month in the company's home country (South Korea). The Tegra 3-powered Optimus Vu will also be available in the US on Verizon's network as LG Intuition around the same time.
Looks like ‘ol Sammy is prepping a tablet codenamed the “P10,” and it’s claim to fame will no doubt be its 256 ppi, 2560×1600 super high resolution Retina-like display. It will be interesting to see how Android will handle a resolution higher than 1080p (I’m wondering if things will look stretched out like in Android’s pre-tablet days).
Court docs don’t reveal too much in terms of a release date, citing only a vague 2012 launch. It’s possible Samsung could be announce the P10 during their launch event on August 15th — they did mention something about a new Galaxy — but I’m still placing my bets on a Note 2 unveiling. How do you guys feel about an Android tablet, of this size, with that high of a resolution. Excessive? We’re gonna need a bigger gun- er, better processor.

The VAIO Duo 11 leaked online earlier this week. The slide-out tablet seems to be a classic Sony device with a fantastic industrial design, which will no doubt give the Surface some competition. However, like most classic Sony devices, it will probably be expensive.

Linux is getting bigger and better. Even “biggest” proprietary companies like Apple could not stay untouched by the magic of open source. With the arrival of cloud, open source is evolving to an entirely new level and even Apple is adapting to it.
Addressing the audiences at first CloudOpen, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation emphasised that everything is becoming a service and these services are moving to the forefront of the enterprise. The best part is that they are built on open source.
So if you intend to master software, you have to master open source. There is no other way to go about it and there is no other way to succeed in the services world than mastering open source.
Brands like Google, IBM and Intel have all understood the importance of open source technology and are investing in it. Even companies like Microsoft, known for their 'proprietary' angles, and even those you would not expect are adopting open source technologies.
Zemlin revealed, “Apple, known to be one of the most closed companies in the world, is using a lot of open source technology. It is proved by the licensing information in the Apple iPhone. The legal section on the iPhone cites Linux Kernel developer Ted Ts’o for his code. Apple uses Linux Suse.”
Zemlin said that Apple has billions of dollars, which can buy companies like HP, Intel and Dell combined. But Apple chose to purchase the copyright to the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), which is present on every Linux and Apple system.
Companies like Apple and Microsoft that equated open source with communism are featuring in the list of top contributor to the Linux Kernel project.

The device runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and boasts of a whopping 2GB of RAM just like the Galaxy Note 10.1. The Note II also has an 8MP rear facing camera and a 1.9MP front facing camera. The device comes with three storage options – 16/32/64GB.
The Galaxy Note II is quite slim measuring a mere 9.4mm in thickness and light as well, weighing a mere 180 grams. The device will be available in two colours - marble white and titanium grey. The resolution of the 5.5-inch display is 1280x720 rather than the expected 1280x800 - a 16:9 aspect ratio. The device houses a 3,100mAh battery.
Samsung has maintained the S Pen stylus from the original Galaxy Note and its core functionality still remains the same as its predecessor. Pulling out the S Pen stylus from its housing and Popup Note loads on the device for quickly jotting down reminders.
No pricing of the device has been revealed but the Note II is expected to hit store shelves in October 2012.
At IFA 2012, Samsung said, “Samsung Mobile is planning a U.S. version of Galaxy Note II, which will be available later in 2012. Building on the success of the original Galaxy Note, we’re confident that the Galaxy Note II continues to redefine what consumers should expect from their smartphone and delivers a powerful, innovative and unique experience. Exact timing and retail channel availability is not being announced at this time, we will continue to share information as it becomes available.”
