Firefox 15 For Windows, Mac, Linux And Android

Continuing with its trend of rapid releases, Mozilla has released new version of Firefox Web browser for desktop and mobile devices. Firefox 15, the latest version of the browser targets the add-ons that consume RAM and hence uses less memory.

The new version of Firefox for Android also offers speed improvements along with a couple of new features

The updated browser comes with a 'request desktop site' option, which allows the users to switch between mobile and full desktop views for Web pages in cases where both are available. The browser maker has resolved the text selection problems and has also added a swipe-to-close gesture for browser tabs. It also brings the ability to find text on a Web page.

The desktop version of the browser, which comes for Linux, Windows and Mac comes added with silent updates, which lets users download and install software update without interventions. It means that new versions of Firefox will be automatically downloaded in the background after release and will be installed the next time users starts the browser. It is the same way as the updates in Google's Chrome is installed.

The Firefox maker says that it has been working on the reduction of memory usage for years. It has finally resorted to targeting 'poorly written add-ons'. The new Firefox can detect memory leaks and has the ability to vacate the memory when it’s no longer required by the plugin.

Firefox for Android can be downloaded from Google Play Store and the latest version of desktop browser is available to be downloaded from Mozilla website.

Know Why Apple Has No Choice But To Go Open Source

Linux is getting bigger and better. Even “biggest” proprietary companies like Apple could not stay untouched by the magic of open source. With the arrival of cloud, open source is evolving to an entirely new level and even Apple is adapting to it.

Addressing the audiences at first CloudOpen, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation emphasised that everything is becoming a service and these services are moving to the forefront of the enterprise. The best part is that they are built on open source.

So if you intend to master software, you have to master open source. There is no other way to go about it and there is no other way to succeed in the services world than mastering open source.

Brands like Google, IBM and Intel have all understood the importance of open source technology and are investing in it. Even companies like Microsoft, known for their 'proprietary' angles, and even those you would not expect are adopting open source technologies.

Zemlin revealed, “Apple, known to be one of the most closed companies in the world, is using a lot of open source technology. It is proved by the licensing information in the Apple iPhone. The legal section on the iPhone cites Linux Kernel developer Ted Ts’o for his code. Apple uses Linux Suse.”

Zemlin said that Apple has billions of dollars, which can buy companies like HP, Intel and Dell combined. But Apple chose to purchase the copyright to the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), which is present on every Linux and Apple system.

Companies like Apple and Microsoft that equated open source with communism are featuring in the list of top contributor to the Linux Kernel project.

Twitter joins the Linux Foundation as a silver member

As we have seen over the past few years, a substantial number of of Internet companies are joining the Linux Foundation. Just take a look on some of the illustrious Linux Foundation members, a list which includes Google, HP, IBM, Intel, Oracle, and now Twitter. Yes, the micro-blogging service Twitter has decided to join the Linux Foundation from next week. Twitter is ready to pay $15,000 to the Linux Foundation each year as a silver member.

You might be wondering, just what makes those big companies get involved with the Linux Foundation – is it just a charitable interest? Well, no! Founded in 2007, Linux Foundation provides a platform for developers, companies and organisations to share their ideas and plans, and that is the main reason for Linux’s growth in such a small period of time.

Twitter is joining Linux Foundation with tens of thousands of Linux servers to provide services to their users. “Linux and its ability to be heavily tweaked is fundamental to our technology infrastructure. By joining The Linux Foundation we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter” - said Chris Aniszczyk, Manager of Open Source, Twitter.

Aniszczyk will be keynoting at the Linux Foundation’s LinuxCon North America 2012 event at San Diego, California next week, along with a presentation titled “The Open Source Technology Behind a Tweet.” Inktank is also joining Linux Foundation next week to provide support of the open source Ceph distributed storage system, and high-performance server manufacturer Servergy.

Linux, trend and which one is for you !

With a host of Linux distributions swarming the market, it is difficult to judge which one is doing the best. Moreover, there is no survey that could establish the fact so far. So, for that the best aid to help judge you is the DistroWatch, the master Linux desktop tracking site for useful desktop Linux use data. Even the site states: "The DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking statistics are a light-hearted way of measuring the popularity of Linux distributions and other free operating systems among the visitors of this website. They correlate neither to usage nor to quality and should not be used to measure the market share of distributions. They simply show the number of times a distribution page on DistroWatch.com was accessed each day, nothing more.”

This list has been recorded keeping in mind the figures in DistroWatch along with a bit of chit chat here and there. Let’s have a look:

Mint Linux: The last time EFYTimes had carried the top Linux distributions, one name that kept coming up was Mint Linux and this time, it is right on the top of the chart. Mint Linux has become even more popular with the downfall of Ubuntu due to the Unity factor. Mint has an outstanding desktop interface of its own, Cinnamon, which reminds you of the classic GNOME 2.x interface.

Mageia: Mageia was released in September 2010, which emerged as a part of Mandriva Linux, a commercial Linux distribution. This distro bailed out Mandriva of its business issues and has been a preferred choice ever since. It has an easy to use user interface and uses KDE 4.8 desktop.

Ubuntu: This distro was on the top spot  but this time it is on number 3. Many Linux enthusiasts don’t like the new Unity interface, as they feel it gets in the way of easy computing. Having said that, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth is sure that the operating system will see 20 million new PCs sold with Ubuntu in 2012. This figure is sans the people who will install it, especially the new converts.

Fedora: This Red Hat's community Linux distribution has the GNOME 3.x, the desktop interface that people love to hate. This makes all the sense, especially for those who work on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) development, as they will be able to see RHEL's future.

Debian: The DistroWatch clearly shows Debian at number 5 in the popularity list. The distro recently turned 19 and clearly takes the cake as it is the foundation for many other Linux distributions.

While we have presented the top five list, we want to tell you that the most popular Linux distro is in your hand, an Android device! Keep pouring your views on your favourite Linux distro...

Android -What is android ???

Android -What is android ???

A question arising in most of the population who were earlier slaved to Nokia,Apple and BlackBerry phones.
Well in simple words its just a kind of windows for Smart-phones but being an open source code its "cost of development" drops a lot as compared to a normal Symbian OS, i OS ,Blackberry OS or Windows Mobile OS.

A clear definition ,features and its brief working is as :

Definition :
Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.
Its a Unix-based operating system firstly made by Android Inc. then in august 2005 google acquired it.

Features

  • Application framework enabling reuse and replacement of components
  • Dalvik virtual machine optimized for mobile devices
  • Integrated browser based on the open source WebKit engine
  • Optimized graphics powered by a custom 2D graphics library; 3D graphics based on the OpenGL ES 1.0 specification (hardware acceleration optional)
  • SQLite for structured data storage
  • Media support for common audio, video, and still image formats (MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF)
  • GSM Telephony (hardware dependent)
  • Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent)
  • Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent)
  • Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE

Android Architecture

The figure shows the major components of the Android operating system. Each section is described in more detail in the figure.

Applications

Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.

Application Framework

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

  • A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
  • Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
  • A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
  • A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
  • An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack
For more details and a walkthrough of an application, see the Notepad Tutorial

Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed be low:

  • · System C library - a BSD-derived implementation of the standard C system library (libc), tuned for embedded Linux- based devices
  • · Media Libraries - based on PacketVideo's OpenCORE; the libraries support playback and recording of many popular audio and video formats, as well as static image files, including MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, and PNG
  • · Surface Manager - manages access to the display subsystem and seamlessly composites 2D and 3D graphic layers from multiple applications
  • · LibWebCore - a modern web browser engine which powers both the Android browser and an embeddable web view
  • · SGL - the underlying 2D graphics engine
  • 3D libraries - an implementation based on OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs; the libraries use either hardware 3D acceleration (where available) or the included, highly optimized 3D software rasterizer
  • · FreeType - bitmap and vector font renderin
  • · SQLite - a powerful and lightweight relational database engine available to all applications
  • Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.
